NAME: This Is Exile
ARTIST:Whitechapel
RATING:
REVIEW: Were I expecting just how good This Is Exile would be, this review would be a 4 star one. It gets a 5 just because it blew my expectations out of the water and really raised my expectations of what a deathcore band should sound like. I hate using the term "brutal" when I'm giving a serious review, but that's probably the best word to describe it. The most notable thing that Whitechapel does is the inclusion of a third guitarist. Two of them are playing 7-strings, so it adds an extra layer of heaviness to the traditional deathcore chug shuffles. The vocalist deals mostly in gutterals. I personally didn't mind, but not everyone's a fan of that kind of vocals. The lyrics themselves are pretty good all across the board. Bass is a bit buried under the extra guitar, but drums sound fine. Pretty technical playing on the drummer's part also. Overall, the entire album comes together incredibly well. Be sure to check out "Father of Lies," "Exalt," and "Somatically Incorrect" if you really must listen to only a couple tracks. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up. -Nick
